There’s more to Open Source than code. One of the most rewarding and challenging experiences can be the “community” part. However, some OSS communities may be more welcoming to contributors than others. Our panelists contribute to several Open Source projects and they will explain how to identify projects that will welcome you as a contributor, as well as how to successfully contribute. This panel will explore:
- Recommendations for joining OSS communities and maintaining relationships
- Best practices for making contributions and becoming a committer
- A behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to moderate an OSS community
- The most surprising things about active participation in an OSS community
“Taking an Employee Resource Group (or Community) from Idea to Impact” by Cheryl Quah, Team Lead – BQuant Applications Engineering & Bloomberg Women in Technology Co-Founder, and Rebecca Ely, Software Engineer & BWIT Allyship Steering Committee Member
Bloomberg Women in Technology (BWIT), an employee-led resource group, has supported women and non-binary engineers at Bloomberg since 2014. This fireside chat between a BWIT founder and a leader in the recently-formed BWIT Allyship community will provide a candid view of what it takes to launch, grow, and sustain the impact of these communities.
“How to Find Your Dream Job in Tech” by Alexandra Dobkin, Software Engineer – BQuant Financial Libraries
Dobs’ first two jobs featured work environments that didn’t feel inclusive or trusting. She feared it was the workplace norm and that she’d have to learn to live with it. Then she found her dream job by accident. But you don’t have to if you apply her “10 Questions I Wish I Would’ve Asked Before Taking the Job.” She’ll share a copy of the questionnaire and the stories behind them. Key questions include:
- How does the company treat its customers/clients/end users?
- What is the company’s commitment to health and wellness?
- What is the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion?
- What impact does the company have in the industry it serves, and how does this translate into the impact you will be making in this role?
- What career path options are available beyond the job you are accepting?

COMPANY
As the central nervous system of global finance, Bloomberg processes more than 100 billion market data messages per day. Bloomberg’s engineers face some of the tech industry’s most complex and challenging problems, including the need to concurrently accommodate the global capital markets’ unyielding requirements for velocity (speed at which the data moves), volume (scale of the data moving through our systems) and veracity (high data quality with no margin for error).
