“Bosch Introduction & Internet of Things (IoT)” by Dr. Uma Krishnamoorthy, Director, Research
“Sensors” by Tara Dowlat, Senior Account Manager, and Dr. Seow Yuen Yee, Senior Research Engineer
In today’s world, Internet of Things (IoT) is a frequently heard term. IoT applications are enabled by Smart sensors interacting with each other. We interface and use many sensors in our day to day lives without fully being aware how these devices operate or improve our quality of life. Sensors are widely adopted in consumer market, as users drive the need to quantify their life, counting their steps, measuring their level of activities, playing video games, or simply seeking safety. Sensors are one of the key element allowing for a connected world. Here, at Bosch, we are proud to be the number one MEMS sensor supplier in the world for the past few years. We have shipped over 10 billion sensors, of which 4 million are produced daily for the consumer market and smart phones. To serve this huge market, a large network of experts including MEMS and ASIC designers, packaging engineers, material scientists, and many other teams collaborate together to develop and mass produce billions of sensors that eventually will be used by people like us in our day to day lives.
“Enabling IoT for Batteries” by Dr. Yelena Gorlin, Senior Engineer
As Internet of Things becomes more prevalent in our everyday lives, one important question that needs to be addressed is how to provide power to all the connected devices and their sensors. The most obvious choice is batteries, but their current charging speed often raises concerns among consumers. Here, at Bosch’s Research and Technology Center in Sunnyvale, CA, a project emerged with the goal of developing a next generation Battery Management System (BMS), which could increase the charging speed of a battery without introducing adverse aging effects. To accomplish this goal, the project draws upon the competencies of the Energy Technologies Department, consisting of an interdisciplinary team of Chemical and Control Systems Engineers, Material Scientists, and Electrochemists.
“Artificial Intelligence (AI)” by LisaMarion Garcia, Software Engineer
Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence is a research and consulting organization whose mission is to help Bosch reach its goal of becoming an AI-driven IoT company. One example being worked on in Sunnyvale is a partnership with the Chassis Control group (automotive) to improve the L3 assisted driving functionality (lane keeping, hazard detection) in their products. Additionally, we are working on an AI-based solution to anonymize Bosch training data to comply with international privacy regulations.
“Human Machine Interaction (HMI)” by Dr. Panpan Xu, Lead Research Scientist, and Dr. Shabnam Ghaffarzadegan, Research Scientist)
In this talk, we will give an overview about our human machine collaboration research at Bosch. On the one hand, we use AI to augment and extend human’s compatibilities. On the other hand, we also try to leverage human intelligence to address the existing weakness of AI. Our research topics include Conversational AI, Big Data Visual Analytics, Language and Audio Analytics, Robotics, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality, and Smart Wearables. Our mission is to develop intuitive, interactive and intelligent technologies and solutions to enable an inspiring user experience for Bosch products and services. We will highlight some of our research topics and discuss how they are applied to Bosch business areas.
“Changing Mobility with Progressive Mobility Players” by Sun-Mi Choi, Director, Business Development & Strategy
The mobility world is changing. End users shape and live a new mobility, shaking up the mobility value chain. They have different mobility needs: intermodal, sharing or hailing rides. The forecast of changing trends from owning to sharing and new mobility players developing new mobility alternatives are shaking up many industries, having a deep impact on the mobility market: a stagnation in vehicles produced can be assumed by 2026. At the same time, new mobility players, young start-ups, are seeing and grasping the chance, entering and forming new mobility markets. They develop new vehicles and features, pushing personalized driving experience with connectivity solutions, comfortable driving with Lv.3-4 AD and electric powertrain. They bring in innovation and new capabilities, disrupting the traditional value chain which is why we call them progressive and forward thinking. We categorize them in two major customer segments: new electric vehicle manufacturers, OEM-based customers, as well as Mobility Service Providers, offering Mobility as a Service. Our target is to understand their requirements, enable their vision with our cross-domain automotive expertise, at the same time, learn from and grow with them, shaping the future of mobility together.
