SurveyMonkey Girl Geek Dinner 2019

We are excited to host a Girl Geek Dinner at SurveyMonkey on Wednesday, May 29th! Join us to hear about career development and self-advocacy, as well as find out first-hand what the women immersed in SurveyMonkey’s research, product design and engineering initiatives are working on.

Our mission is to power the curious. Come hear our lighting talks and panel discussion, find out what makes our girl geeks tick, and bring lots of questions!

Robin Ducot, Chief Technology Officer at SurveyMonkey, will share the story of her career path and her decision to join SurveyMonkey. She will moderate a panel of senior female leaders who will provide insights on career path-related topics such as how to make deliberate career decisions, when to change jobs or careers, and how to ask for promotion, among other topics.

Panelists include Shilpa Apte (SurveyMonkey Engineering Manager), Erica Weiss Tjader (SurveyMonkey Vice President, Product Design), Jing Huang (SurveyMonkey Director of Engineering, Machine Learning). Moderated by Robin Ducot (SurveyMonkey Chief Technology Officer).

Lightning Talks:

“Surveys: Why do they matter?” – Sarah Cho (SurveyMonkey Director of Research)

Whether it’s on the web, over the phone, in-person, or even through the mail, we’ve all taken at least one survey. Why the heck does it seem like surveys are popping up everywhere? Are they actually helpful, or are they just a pain in the you know…? How can they go horribly wrong? Why should you think about using surveys for your work? (And how many questions can be crammed into one lightning talk?) Learn how surveys impact our everyday lives and how you can use them to improve what you do both at work and at home.

“Human Readable: Designing Data for Carbon-Based Lifeforms” – Sarah Goldschmidt (SurveyMonkey Product Design Manager)

Data is everywhere — from your work desk to your smartphone to your fridge — and in 2019 it has evolved from the output of a digital product to the product itself. What does that mean for us as builders of products? Let’s talk about how designers can make meaning from data in product experiences and, with it, better, more human-centered technology.

“Transforming SurveyMonkey’s front-end platform with GraphQL” by Mala Neti (SurveyMonkey Software Engineer on the Web Platform Team)

We’re excited to share SurveyMonkey’s journey towards revamping our front-end platform using GraphQL. Learn how we used GraphQL and Apollo Client to build out our aggregation layer, and follow along as we talk through some real-world examples and chat about helpful developer tools that we used along the way.
