Oakland Public School Volunteer: Helping Students With College Applications

VOLUNTEER ON NOVEMBER 3 WITH STUDENTS COLLEGE ESSAYS!

On Friday, November 3, 2023 (8:30am-12:30pm), Girl Geek X Community VOLUNTEER shifts are 8:30am-12:30pm on Friday, November 3, 2023 and/or Friday, November 17, 2023 at CCPA’s College & Career office.

Seniors are working on their college applications and are writing their Personal Insight Questions (PIQ) as part of the UC admissions application.

Volunteers will be matched with and sit down with students to read their PIQ responses to provide feedback on grammar, flow, and clarity. These “College Crunch Days” are dedicated school days for high school seniors to work on their writing for their college applications, and get crucial feedback from volunteers.

Note: a writing/comms background is NOT required to participate! Any experience writing in an academic/professional setting will be sufficient to participate in this event. Volunteers will be given the writing prompts ahead of time and samples of responses.

The school has the highest college-going rate in the district despite being located in one of Oakland’s highest poverty neighborhoods.

This event is organized in partnership with the nonprofit Oakland Public Education Fund, which connects groups with schools to make a positive impact on school culture and student achievement through relevant and meaningful volunteer projects.

Our partnership goal is to support students in East Oakland, CA by partnering on a variety of volunteer activities throughout the school year — from volunteering on-campus to field trips to tech companies.
