“Welcome to Stitch Fix” by Cathy Polinsky, Chief Technology Officer
“Mind the Gap: How our brains fool us into thinking we understand” by Emma Colner, Software Engineer
It’s hard to reason about what we know, and especially hard to perfectly communicate abstract ideas to others. In Emma’s talk, she discusses some idiosyncrasies and natural limitations of our minds that we all experience in the process of becoming experts, with the goal of becoming a better communicator, problem solver and business partner.
“Transforming the Way Merchants Find What They Love” by Anna Schneider, Data Science Manager
At Stitch Fix Algorithms, we collaborate with business partners to make their work more algo-driven and innovative, so we can ultimately deliver a more personalized experience to our clients. In this talk, Anna will tell the story of how we’ve kept these values in mind while developing a human-in-the-loop algorithm for personalized merchandising, including some ups and downs along the way.
“Partnering on Style” by Erin Boyle, Data Scientist and Bingrui Tang, Senior UX Designer
Understanding client style is a critical part of Stitch Fix’s business proposition. Recommendation systems like matrix factorization can help match items to the clients they’re best for. But they can also do more — paint a picture of the “space” of style preference, or communicate a client’s aesthetic to their stylist. Erin will discuss work related to that boundary between machine learning and human interpretation.
Everyday, thousands of Stitch Fix stylists use our internal styling platform to learn about clients and help them find what they love. A big part of Bing’s job is to figure out the right data to show, and the right way to show it. In her talk, she will use Latent Style as an example to walk you through the design decision making process, showing how the team managed to fulfill both stylist’s needs and business needs.
“Dossiers of Awesome: One Way to Help Folks Get the Recognition they Deserve” by Erin Dees, Principal Software Engineer
We often hear that strong women should lift one another up, but how? In Erin’s talk, “Dossiers of Awesome,” you’ll hear one strategy that she and her teammates developed to help everyone get the recognition and visibility they deserved. This practice helped elevate the marginalized people, and also boosted the quality of feedback across the entire team.
At Stitch Fix, our Technology team builds innovative software that creates engaging client experiences, solutions for data-driven merchandising, streamlines warehouse and inventory management logistics, and scales remote styling services. Our industry-leading Algorithms team develops cutting edge algorithms on our rich dataset that enable our company to leverage vast amounts of data to inform decisions across our business.
