Instrumental Girl Geek Dinner 2018

Come join the women of Instrumental on Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 for an evening of food, drinks, networking, and discussion for a Girl Geek X Dinner at StartX in Palo Alto! The theme is “Sexy Problems in Unsexy Industries: Manufacturing Edition”.

Manufacturing is not only for hardware engineers – there’s a lot of opportunity in this space for people with all sorts of backgrounds! Instrumental girl geeks will discuss the challenges of creating a market in a giant space without incumbents, building a machine learning dataset from zero, and getting all of the pieces to work together. Join the women of Instrumental at StartX Palo Alto to learn more about this unseen world that affects our lives every day.

“Intro to Instrumental” with Anna-Katrina Shedletsky

Quick intro to founder and CEO Anna-Katrina. Quick overview of Instrumental and manufacturing. Addressing key technical problems – solving for: hardware, software, business development, marketing.

“Starting from Scratch” with Simon Kozlov & Stella Mashkevitch

Most of the time, performance of the machine learning models is limited by the quality of the data that’s fed to them. This talk is about creating high-quality datasets in a startup environment. We will talk about possible ways to get the data you need and to make it high-quality, which includes experts providing labels and judgment. The problem with acquiring the data is that a lot of interesting datasets are not public and can’t be bought. The problems with experts are that they’re very hard to find and never agree with each other. We’ll cover several ideas and practices that help with both.

“Product and Business Challenges in Unsexy Industries” with Shilpi Kumar

COMPANY

Instrumental was founded by two ex-Apple mechanical engineers who know firsthand how difficult it is to develop and build high quality products on time. Small, unexpected defects result in delayed product launches, lost revenues, and brand damage for even the most admired hardware companies. Current quality inspection and failure analysis techniques are labor-intensive and bombard engineers with data that isn’t concise enough to be used efficiently. Iteration is inhibited, even when engineers think they’re working quickly. At Instrumental, we have a vision of machine-centric manufacturing that allows engineers and operators to do more meaningful work and build high quality products faster than ever.
