May is a Principal Medical Research Scientist at Intuitive, where she explores novel approaches for training surgeons and surgical teams to use cutting-edge technologies like the da Vinci Surgical System. She joined Intuitive in 2010 to supervise validity research for the da Vinci Skills Simulator. Her research has since expanded into other areas of enhanced training technologies, such as the application of serious games, virtual and augmented reality, the Internet of Things, and machine learning to optimize surgeon and team performance. She earned her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, and has been an invited speaker at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation, the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference, and the Clinical Robotic Surgical Association annual meeting. Dr. Liu is driven by a fascination about how people do things, and her passion is to use this knowledge in service to the clinical community.
