Maggie Law

Maggie is Director of Product Design at Okta. She previously held lead design and management roles at Salesforce.com, Skyport Systems (now Cisco), SAP, and Peoplesoft/Oracle. At Salesforce, she managed teams of UX designers and researchers responsible for all Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, and Data Cloud products. In the Spring of 2014, Maggie taught a course on UX research methods at UC Berkeley’s School of Information. Prior to pursuing her design career, Maggie was a semi-professional musician who played in several Bay Area bands. She holds a Master of Information Management & Systems and a B.S. in Classical Languages, and she is Board President for SF-based nonprofit Women’s Audio Mission.

Over 100 girl geeks attended Okta Girl Geek Dinner to hear lightning talks on product, engineering, UX design, and how to balance security and usability - and accessibility! Speakers include Maggie Law (Director of Product Design), Angie Song and Helen Chen (Software Engineers), Jade Feng (Product Manager), and Sara Daqiq (Developer Support Engineer). “If It’s Not Usable, It’s Not Secure” by Maggie Law, Director of Product Design at Okta

In the field of user experience, the term 'usability' combines themes of learnability, familiarity, and facility in performing tasks. Security, defined simply as freedom from danger or threat, has historically been ignored as baked into any feature by default. But increasingly, security has become necessary – even urgent – to incorporate into our understanding of usability. I’ll reflect on my own thoughts about how these two concepts have converged over my 20-year career in UX and Design, and (hopefully) shift how a few attendees think in the process.
