Betta Lyon Delsordo

Betta Lyon Delsordo began her cyber journey at the age of 13 when she started teaching herself to code. This grew into freelance web development work, where she soon realized she needed to know more about application security to keep her clients safe. Several degrees and certifications later, Betta is working as a Application Penetration Tester (Ethical Hacker) for OnDefend. Betta is very involved in the cybersecurity community and with organizations that support women in technology. She has been a mentor for 8 years with Technovation, and is an organizer and speaker for diversity in tech organizations including RTC, WiCyS, WISP, and WSC.

Realistic Tips for Getting Started in Cybersecurity

Ethical Hacker Betta Lyon-Delsordo shares her enthusiasm for cybersecurity, a cool and competitive field. She believes you have to take certain steps to stand out from the crowd. As everyone wants to hire an expert, you have to find your specialization in cybersecurity, something people will pay you to do repeatedly. She discusses how to build experience without a job (e.g. entry-level these days means 2-5 years of the following: teaching cyber awareness to kids and seniors, competing in Capture-The-Flag competitions, doing Bug Bounty hunts, posting about research projects, attending meetups and conferences, getting degrees or certifications, and working IT helpdesk or TA jobs).
